Work at Home Moms are the Future
It used to be that stay-at-home mothers had two choices: wait until the
kids are old enough and go back to your old job, or remain a fulltime
homemaker. These days, though, there is a valid third option: become a work
from home mom.
For women who don’t want to work outside the house or take on part-time
work, there are many opportunities to become a successful home-based
businesswoman. Essentially, they boil down to two categories. You can sell
your own products, or someone else’s, or offer a service that you can do out
of your own home.
For a work from home mom, there are a number of items that you can make at
home and sell through a web-based business. Toiletries, health supplements,
crafts and children’s clothing, for example, can be made-to-order and
shipped via an online catalogue. You can keep costs down by having a limited
inventory and making your own website. If your everyday and overhead costs
can be minimized, you will be able to weather the early months and years
when sales are lean, then reap the rewards when the business builds.
Offering services is time-honored way for work from home moms to keep their
hand in the for-profit world. By offering a service such as accounting,
website building, consulting or providing niche-based research, the young
mother provide an inexpensive option for other business-owners who need her
skills.
Overhead costs are minimized and this option really takes advantage of
current technology to further limit the upstart expense. A phone, computer,
and fax machine are all that is necessary to market a woman’s skills and
provide a reasonably priced, customized service tailored to the needs of the
employer.
Some women find that joining a commission-based virtual sales force is the
way to go with a home-based business. With this type of program, many of the
day-to-day tasks of running a business are dealt with by the central
organization, so fewer actual business skills are needed. The products range
from broad-based, such as health and beauty products, to the very
customized, such as children’s clothing and educational programs. Companies
may offer training, website space and other support services, so the work
from home mom feels that she has the back-up she needs from the start.
If you want to be a work from home mom, remember that safety comes first. Do
a lot of digging and research. Ask friends and family for their ideas and
input. Read contracts carefully before buying in to any program, or signing
up for special training, or buying equipment through an agency.
